Americans overwhelmingly hold an unfavorable view of China, with an increasing number labeling the nation as an enemy of the United States, according to a Pew Research Center survey released Wednesday. Half the respondents identified China as a competitor, while 6% saw it as a partner to the U.S. The polling results come at a contentious time between the world's top two economies and ahead of the U.S. presidential elections. The survey also found that those who say the current U.S. economic situation is bad are more likely to blame China and hold unfavorable opinions of the country.

CNN —Authorities have recovered the body of a fifth victim in the Baltimore bridge collapse five weeks ago, officials said Wednesday. A 213-million-pound cargo vessel slammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26, crippling the structure and killing six workers repairing potholes on it. The six construction workers were immigrants from Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico and Guatemala. “Maryland State Police investigators along with officers from the Maryland Transportation Authority Police and the FBI responded to the scene and recovered the body of a fifth construction worker inside a red truck,” he added. Attorneys representing the families of two deceased workers and a victim who survived the fall have started their own investigation.

About half a million light vans are sold in the United States every year, with many of those going to companies like Amazon and FedEx. Light vans are those with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 10,000 pounds. Lane departure prevention technology could have helped prevent or, at least, reduce the seriousness of, about 11% of those fatal crashes. That tech could help prevent 37% of fatal crashes involving delivery vans, the Institute said. In more than 60% of crashes and more than half of fatal crashes, the occupant of another vehicle or a pedestrian or cyclist was killed or injured.

Receiving a first Olympic medal is supposed to be a momentous and exhilarating occasion for every athlete but not Alysia Montaño. “A stab in the gut, in the heart, really,” is how she describes her supposed moment of triumph. In the days after learning that she could be awarded a bronze medal, Montaño says that her emotions oscillated from joy to sadness to something akin to grief. Savinova celebrates her winning gold at the London Olympics, a title of which she was later stripped. Montaño being awarded her bronze medal from the 2013 world championships in 2019.

Amazon 's earnings report on Tuesday evening will give investors insight into two of the biggest stories on Wall Street — the resilient U.S. consumer and the artificial intelligence boom. Wall Street is generally optimistic about Amazon, as more than 90% of analysts have a buy or strong buy rating on the stock, according to LSEG. Several other tech companies, including Alphabet , have already reported strong advertising numbers for the first quarter. "We increase our Amazon advertising outlook following the impressive 2H23 performance and encouraging industry checks. On a ~55% margin, Advertising [earnings before interest and taxes] moves from $26B in FY23 to $41B in FY26," MoffettNathanson analyst Michael Morton said in an April 22 note.

The International Monetary Fund raised its Asia growth forecast for 2024 on Tuesday, as it remained optimistic about India's growth and focused on the need for more stimulus from China. The IMF now expects Asia's economy to grow 4.5% this year, up 0.3 percentage points from six months earlier. The upward revision reflects upgrades for China, the IMF said, where it expects policy stimulus to provide support. India is currently the world's fifth-largest economy with GDP of $3.7 trillion and is aiming to become the world's third-largest by 2027. IMF's Srinivasan also wrote that strong private consumption will continue to drive growth in Asia's other emerging markets.

CNN —The US State Department has determined that five Israeli security units committed gross violations of human rights prior to the outbreak of the war with Hamas in Gaza, but is still deciding whether to restrict military assistance to one of the units under US law. The other four “have effectively remediated these violations,” deputy State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel said Monday. The US is still deciding whether to restrict assistance to the remaining unit – reported to be the ultra-Orthodox Netzah Yehuda battalion. They have submitted additional information as it pertains to that unit, and we’re continuing to have those conversations,” Patel said. Patel also declined to detail the units or speak about specifics of the remediation process.
